Twin Rivers Sunday 21st September

Twenty people attended on the day, the weather was perfect and enthusiasm levels were high.

After a few hours on the water it became evident that the fish weren't on the bite.  There were lots of fish showing on our sounders but enticing them into the boat was a difficult task.  It just goes to show that careful preparation before you fish does pay off as it was rumored that a certain member spent over $300 on a huge range of different baits and he ended up weighing in the two heaviest fish - and good fish they were at 1.125kg and .955kg.  These two fish were spawning and it was a wonderful sight to watch them being released back into the river.  Everyone enjoyed a couple of hotdogs and a good yarn after the weigh-in and we look forward to doing it again next year.

Unfortunately we didn't get photo's of the two heaviest fish but click on the photos tab and check out the huge flathead that was caught!

Austackle Flathead Fishing Classic results - Families, Fishing and Fun!

Wow, what a wonderful weekend for families, fishing and having fun! The inaugural Austackle Flathead Fishing Classic has been run and won with many happy winners - including our own club and the whole East Gippsland area.
The weather was perfect for what turned out to be a great fishing classic: beyond our expectations as a club holding its first competition. With 158 entries (29 of these being juniors), it was full steam ahead with registrations being taken over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They came from all over the state - Geelong, Preston, Traralgon, Orbost, Maffra, Wodonga let alone our own backyard - Bruthen, Lakes Entrance, Bairnsdale etc.
The 'catch and release' method proved a popular method of fishing but the 'brag' photos were something to behold. One story we heard was about a fellow fishing at Nowa Nowa who had caught an 84cm Flathead, but he wasn't entered in the competition! We did see the photos of this fish and it was massive (almost prehistoric)!
Another story from the weekend was the fellow who was fishing in a boat with some younger members who had to come back in to get his own 'ruler' as the antics of the two younger members was driving him mad and "I'll throttle them if I don't get away from them!"
The young lad who landed a big Flathead and had spent the $250 junior prize already (in his mind) - on a remote controlled car (he actually did win the juniors).
The 3rd place-getter was getting 'razzed' by other members of his party because he didn't even know he had a huge flathead on his line!
The girls who stopped off for a 'pit-stop' and threw in a line to catch the biggest whiting of the day - and the list goes on.
The Fishing Club Team event went to the GLFC rivals - Lake Tyers Beach Angling Club but much banter was made before the event about who was the better fishing club. The challenge is now on for next year.
As one of the organisers I must say it was a pleasure to meet such happy people who came together in a group with fishing as the common denominator. Not one word did I hear in a negative way; everyone from all over the state enjoying the camaraderie of others they may have just met. It was wonderful!
I would like to thank all the sponsors who supported our competition and all the local businesses who also supported us. There were stories we heard how the "bait shop" told us about the comp, the "caravan park" who sent confirmation of accommodation and advertised the comp was on etc.
The winners of the actual prizes are listed below - Congratulations on all who fished and caught something for their efforts. Better luck next time if you missed on catching a Flathead or it just " got away". Just as a side issue, the average size for the Flathead caught over the weekend was 542mm.

New Committee for 2014

The club's Annual General Meeting was held last Wednesday week and all positions have now been filled for the upcoming new season.
Congratulations to all executive members (as listed below) and we wish the executive and committee all the best as they head into the business of running a club. It certainly is nice to see some 'new blood' in the committee seats all of whom seem enthusiastic and determined to make a great club even greater.
Just a reminder that we have a competition on February 23rd (Sunday) against Lake Tyers Angling Club and no doubt our members will be well ready for some stiff competition from the LTAC members - as per usual!
The other reminder is about our Austackle Flathead Fishing Classic on March 8th - 10th. With mega prizes to be had, let alone the $1,000 first prize for the longest Flathead, everyone entering has a great chance of taking home a prize or two - just for participating. Entry forms are available in the 'Competitions Tab' on this blog.
Finally, we have had a change of dates for our Mallacoota and Timbarra competitions with a complete 'switch' of dates i.e. Timbarra now 28th - 30th March, Mallacoota - 4th - 6th April. This change was due to Mallacoota requesting the change as they have a very hectic program of fishing in March. Once again pride will be on the line as the GLFC hopes to regain the trophy that was lost for the first time last year to Mallacoota. Bring it on!
