Marlo Fishing Competition - August 21st - 23rd 2015

Eleven persons ventured to Marlo for this weekend, nine arriving on Friday whilst Peter and Kerry turned up on Saturday after spending a few days sorting out the calving stock. The Myers family came as a unit with Bronwyn, Ian, Sean and James.

We stayed at the Caravan Park opposite the hotel, luckily getting 4 sites beside each other at the back of the park which enabled us to fit in the Myers caravan, David’s tent and delightful clinker built boat, the McDonald’s large boat attached to a Landcruiser, Barry’s tent and my caravan.

The weather was perfect although it was predicted to deteriorate on Sunday afternoon.

Fishing for the weekend was somewhat difficult for most of us although Sean managed to out-fish both his brother and father most of the time. It was soon apparent that prawns were not the flavour of the month and nearly all fish were caught on the good old sandworm including those marinated in metho. Typical of what happened over the weekend was demonstrated in my boat where I caught 2 keepers on Friday afternoon whereas on Saturday Barry caught about 10 with 6 or 7 keepers and I only caught two undersized and then on Sunday morning we caught one keeper each. However in the Myer boat they caught 16 between them on Saturday afternoon. Saturday was the best day with David and Carol catching 2 and even Alby caught one (but there may be a fine associated with this latter one as there was a whisper in the camp that Carol had to bait his hook.)

We all headed for the pub on Friday night where an enjoyable meal was had by all-- David picked out the wrong card and missed out on the $1900 but got a glass of wine instead and Barry won a meat tray in the Friday night raffle

Saturday saw the arrival of the Edgley's who proceeded to head out to sea, via the entrance. Whilst out there Kerry threw a few lures around and managed to catch a variety of fish including the winning ’other species’ that being a Wrasse which just pipped Carol’s Mullett.

Saturday night saw many hands pitch in to preparing the ‘Club dinner’ which consisted of beautifully cooked rump steak, spuds cooked in foil, carrots and peas and corn--special thanks to Barry for cooking the potatoes in his ‘spit thing’ and Carol, Bronwyn and Kerry for their help. Sandra Bills sent Barry along with a steamed pudding and Carol brought along 12 little apple pies she had made. The only issue with the meal was that there was a whole saucepan of peas ‘n corn left over.

The winning bream was caught by Ian Myers weighing in at 669 gms whilst the junior award went to Sean Myers for a fish weighing 561 gms.

These weights may seem low but most fish caught over the weekend were around 30-32 cms long.

The secret weight was won by Barry Bills.
